I'm writing this assessment given that I could not locate any other testimonials on this or a similar item that spoke to the particular problem I was dealing with. Hopefully this helps an individual else!
I purchased this to drain about six inches of water from my retail retailer purchased above ground pool. The drain plug in the pool regrettably was up as well high to fully empty it. I had to drain to take away algae and debris that had built up along the bottom that chemical substances and the pools filter would not eliminate. This is not a permanent above ground pool mind you, it is one of the larger (5000 gallons) retail chain store pools.
At any rate, I needed to get all of the disgusting brown sludge water out of the bottom but I had a couple of concerns:
- Would this type of pump harm the pool? (i.e. suck up the bottom plastic liner)
A: No, not at all. I placed it straight on the plastic pool bottom.
- Would it be potent sufficient to push the water up more than the pool wall? (about 4ft)
A: Yes, pretty significantly so!
All you will most likely have to add to this product is a standard garden hose to drain the water and possibly an extension cord.
I hooked this up and about an hour and a half later numerous hundreds of gallons of disgusting water was gone. The water was coming out of the hose faster than it does my property faucet. In addition, I got this shipped overnight (making use of Amazon Prime) for half of what a similar model would have cost at a DIY home retailer.
I couldn't obtain it anyplace but I think this is also produced in the US which was one more plus for me. If you need to drain your pond or pool quickly I assume you will be extremely happy with this item.

My backyard has a slight dip in it that collects snow / ice all winter. This year we have had alternating snow, ice and rain. The yard is frozen (three" ice) with various inches of water on top rated. The water was creeping closer to my foundation and I was concerned about infiltration into my basement / den. I chopped a hole in the ice for the pump base (low spot for water to gather), attached 48' of corrugated PE tubing (Flotec FP0012-6U-P2 Universal Discharge Hose Kit, 24-Feet by 1-1/4-Inch or 1-1/2-Inch), plugged 'er in and a variety of hours later my foundation is in the clear. The filter in the bottom did not permit any yard debris to enter impeller housing. It did not clog and the self-priming functions effectively. The 25' energy cord is a "need to have" function. As the ice melts and alot more water collects I will pump it away. This pump is A lot superior than the plastic housing light-duty pumps I located at my neighborhood box retailers (and much less highly-priced). Amazon you saved my den...thank you!
EDIT 21 March 2012: The frigid water finally took its toll...the debris screen cracked in a number of locations and failed. I contacted Superior pumps and they sent out a replacement quickly (about 8 days). Though waiting I ordered (overnight Prime) the following and fabricated a better replacement than the original. Polypropylene Perforated Sheet, White, Staggered 1/8" Round Perfs, 7/32" Center Spacing, 1/8" Thick, 12" Width, 12" Length. Poly is a lot more temperature resistant than the original plastic. I'll maintain the factory replacement as a template for future screen damage. The pump itself still rates 5 Stars.
